The best place on the web for family history research is Cyndi's List.  I use The Master Genealogist for all my database needs ... I have tried quite a few programs (Family Tree Maker, Generations, Personal Ancestral File, Legacy 4.0 and more) but this one suits me and has a lot of powerful features. I have found a fabulous program for creating on-line family group sheets (which I will publish later) called GedPage v2.05.
