My ahnentafel

Ahnentafel Numbering System

An ahnentafel is an ancestor-based numbering system. It comes from a German word meaning "ancestor table". It is basically a list of all known ancestors of a specific individual. Ahnentafel charts use a strict numbering scheme which makes it easy to see, at a glance, how a specific ancestor is related to the root individual. They also include the full name, and dates and places of birth, marriage and death for each listed individual (when known).

The key to reading an ahnentafel is to understand its numbering system. Basically, you double any individual's number to get his/her father's number, and double a person's number and add one to get his/her mother's number. On your ahnentafel chart, you would be number 1. Your father would then be number 2 (your number * 2 -> 1*2=2), and your mother, number 3 (1*2+1=3). Other than the starting person, males always have even numbers and women the odd numbers.

William and John were granted a large area of land at Diddleum Plains, spelt Didlem at the time, on the St Patrick's River. As the land was so wild and rough, however, no other settlers went there and the brothers were forced to leave. They chose the Deloraine district. William's first purchase seems to have been four acres of land, for the sum of £50 (on what is now the corner of Church Street and West Parade) where the old probation station stood. He immediately removed every trace of the prison, which had been vacated in 1846. As the newly formed Emu Bay Road ran through the centre of the property, there were several suitable sites for business premises. William was still farming on land at Evandale known as "Melwood Farm" and at the same time was renting "Stockers Plains". In those days, William was a man of considerable means. He promoted the progress of Deloraine. In 1849, before he came to reside permanently in Deloraine, he build a butcher's shop on vacant ground next to the Post Office (which we think is now a library). The butcher's shop was opened by his eldest son, Thomas, who later was a well-known resident of Native Plains, near Railton. William built a general store adjoining the butcher's shop which he let to a Mr W.H. King, and a two storey premises, the Great Western Hotel (later known as the Railton Hotel) which he let to Mr James Johnstone, his brother-in-law, at a rental of £250 per annum. William was living in the district of Morven (Evandale) when his youngest daughter, Mary, was born in Jan 1849, but living in Deloraine when his son, Hubert, was born in Apr 1851. At the time of William's death, he owned 500 acres near Quamby Brook (just a short distance past the Deloraine Golf Course). William died on 20 Nov 1861 and Marion died on 31 Jul 1869.

James held this licence until the early 1860s. In 1865, they took out a licence at their newly-extended home and called it the Family and Commercial Inn. James died on 1 Dec 1866 and Grace, who retained ownership of the building, leased it out. As of May 1800, he was also known as George Lovett (23) [Assumption] George was adopted by George Lovett after his mother married in May 1800. It may be that George Lovett (snr) was in fact the father of George, although it is only known that he was the natural son of Ann Artis. He married Esther Thurgate (24), daughter of Benjamin Thurgate (10795) and Elizabeth Murrell (10796), on 27 Oct 1814 at St Michael's Church, Beccles, Suffolk, England. He witnessed the marriage of Samuel Norman (10841) and Mary Thurgate (10840) on 12 Oct 1815 at St Michael's Church, Beccles, Norfolk, England. He was [The Ipswich Journal] George Lovett was indicted for stealing certain promissory notes, the property of Messrs Gurneys, Turner and Co, bankers and co-partners. There were other counts to the indictments, laying the property to be that of Mr Bohun, who kept the Branch Bank at Beccles. The prisoner was clerk or writer to Mr Bohun, at a a salary of 85 pounds a year, and occasionally assisted the clerk in the bank, who most fully proved the case. The notes were deposited in an iron box to which both clerks had access, and upon the amount being found not to correspond with the tally or book, the prisoner admitted he had taken 250 pounds to make good some money belonging to the Saving Bank, and to answer some pressing calls upon him. Verdict - Guilty. The prisoner was then further indicted for stealing 120 pounds in sovereigns and half-sovereigns. This was proved in the same way, the prisoner saying, when the other clerk was about to count the cash up, "You need not tell them again, for I have taken 120 pounds." Verdict - Guilty. The Jury strongly recommended the prisoner to mercy, as although but a young man he had a wife and eight children. This case, as it proceeded, most powerfully arrested the attention of all present. The witness who had been fellow-clerk with the prisoner for many years, gave his testimony with the greatest precision but was so deeply affected as to be obliged several times to pause in order to recover his power of utterance. His emotion, and the evident truth of his testimony, carried such conviction to all, that the prisoner's counsel scarcely ventured a question, and when he was asked as to the character the prisoner had borne, the feeling and eagerness with which he said "Oh, the most irreproachable! I would at all times have trusted him with my life!" had such an effect, that many, not of the softer sex alone, were unable to restrain their tears. Mr Bohun also said that up to the time of the discovery his confidence in the prisoner was unlimited and his general character exemplary. The Judge (who was far from being exempt from the pervading sympathy) then addressed the prisoner in the most impressive manner and observed that every one had felt for him, but that the Jury and himself were bound to do their duty; he was sorry he could not listen to their recommendation. It was to the mercy only of the prosecutors that he was indebted, for had he been indicted for the capital offence, the consequent punishment must have followed, as should have been bound to permit the law to take its course. The prisoner should have been the last person to have acted dishonestly towards the prosecutor - the breach of faith and confidence reposed in him as a servant, was the greatest aggrevation of the offence. His Lordship then sentenced him to be transported for 14 years. The prisoner who was a very respectable looking man, was not observed to speak during his trial and conducted himself as if grateful for a commuted punishment on 31 Jul 1830 at Suffolk Assizes, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England.
